Helio Lopes

Hélio Lopes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at PUC-Rio. He has a Doctoral degree in Mathematics (1996), a Master’s degree in Informatics (1992) and a Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering (1990). All of these degrees were obtained at PUC-Rio. He worked from 1996 to 2011 in the Department of Mathematics / PUC-Rio as an (Assistant / Associate) Professor, and in 2001 in the Computer Science Department at PURDUE University as a visiting scholar collaborating with Prof. Christoph M. Hoffmann. His research is mainly in the fields of Computer Graphics, Computational Modeling and Data Science.

He likes to develop and to apply advanced mathematical and computational techniques to solve real-world problems that have engineering, scientific and industrial relevance. He is partially sponsored by a CNPq productivity research scholarship and by research grants from CNPq, FAPERJ, CAPES and FINEP. Since 1992, he has been applying his research to the development of computer systems for PETROBRAS, mainly in the area of reservoir characterization and in seismic modeling and analysis. For the last eight years, he also did some consulting activities for other companies like BR DISTRIBUIDORA, PRODERJ and BRADESCO SEGUROS. In addition, for GLOBO.COM, BNDES, BANCO DO BRASIL, VALE and PETROBRAS, Hélio Lopes taught on-site advanced mathematical and computational courses.

Hélio Lopes is an associate editor of the journal IEICE Nonlinear Theory and Its Applications (NOLTA). He is also a member of the AcM Siggraph, SBC (Brazilian Computer Society) and of the SBMAC (Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics). He is president of the Special Interest Group in Computer Graphics and Image Processing of the SBC (CEGRAPI).
